Where can I store edible carbon dioxide for the aquarium?
Hello! Need a bottle for food carbon dioxide (for a home aquarium). I really like composite cylinders, but for some reason they cannot be used for carbon dioxide, as they say. Tell me why?

Hello! Food carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide) is a colorless, odorless gas. In liquefied form, carbon dioxide is stored in cylinders under a pressure of 60-70 atmospheres. The requirements for gas storage cylinders are regulated by GOST 949-73. Gosstandart describes only those cylinders that are made of steel grade 45D or 40HGSA. Meanwhile, there are intersectoral rules POT Рм 014-2000, in which the material and its brands are not indicated for the manufacture of cylinders used to store carbon dioxide. The rules contain 2 basic requirements for containers: 1) it must withstand a pressure of 70 atm .; 2) be staffed in accordance with the law.
Under the complete set means the presence of:
- oxygen valve;
- rubber shipping ring;
- a support shoe;
- steel or fiber cap;
- throat ring.
Based on the requirements of POT RM 014-2000, we can conclude that composite cylinders can be used to store carbon dioxide if they have a working pressure of at least 70 atm.
Today, composite cylinders made in Germany and Russia are presented on the market, the working pressure of which ranges from 150 to 200 atm. The only negative of such products is the relatively high cost. More information about composite cylinders can be found in this article on our website.
