Hello! Tell me, please, can cast-iron batteries make a hole, leak, etc., if they have been used since the end of the 90s? Or is it just pipes connecting the batteries? Is it even possible for cast-iron batteries to flow, rust? Thanks in advance.

Hello. A common misconception of many - cast iron does not rust. Of course, it rusts. The old cast-iron radiators from the time of our grandmothers were so resistant to corrosion due to the fact that the alloy of iron with carbon and alloying impurities, in fact, the material itself, was of high quality. But they also became worthless. Also, cast iron, again, depending on the raw materials of manufacture, can be damaged by mechanical stress, due to factory defects, lose resistance to rust due to exposure to acids (with which owners often try to wash them), and so on.

We will not go into chemical details and compositions, we will simply answer your question - yes, the batteries could leak and leak, including rust. But docking leaks cannot be ruled out, due to design features, it is often not so easy to understand where the “accident” occurred, but this is quite real.

If you live in MKD, write a statement to the emergency room of the Criminal Code or to the HOA, let the masters send for verification, it is forbidden to do such work yourself. True, if you do not neglect the services of a master in a private house, while not being a specialist, it is still a heating system. At the same time, I would advise you not to make a nonsense in the form of cold welding, but to radically change the device, if a leak is found on it, and not on the seam. As a rule, such nonsense is short-lived.

It would also be nice to get more information on the subject. Where the leak was discovered, on the basis of which conclusions were drawn about the damage to the “body” of cast iron, a couple of photos.

    Good luck

    Good afternoon, Galina.

Cast iron batteries “flow” over time, mainly at the junction of sections. Most often this happens at the beginning of the heating season. During the launch of the boiler room, water hammer occurs, if the radiators withstand, then in a particular season the chance to leak is minimal. In general, it depends on the general condition. In most cases, they can be restored, but will require removal.

If the radiator stops warming evenly, then it’s time to clean, it is usually called “siltation”.

Pipes, if metal, but I think you have metal, also rot over time. Only ecoplast can be called eternal.

Not always cast-iron batteries from water hammer flow precisely along the seam. It often happens that the radiator simply breaks from a sharp water hammer. I can attach as an example a photograph where such an incident occurred at one of the clients. To prevent this from happening, you need to install special valves-shock absorbers. And also there are pressure reducers with a crane specifically for heating systems.
