Natural gas in the vast majority of situations is the cheapest type of fuel for organizing autonomous heating and domestic hot water. However, you must admit that this energy source is very explosive. If the boiler working on it is mounted and connected incorrectly, then it is not far from trouble. Therefore, it is worthwhile to study the room requirements for installing a gas boiler in advance, familiarize yourself with the regulations and rules for installing this equipment.

Before you start installing the heating boiler, you should carefully study the requirements for the room for its installation. Only by observing these standards can we talk about the safe operation of gas appliances. Moreover, gas workers will not even connect you to the pipe if the gas equipment is not installed in the proper conditions.

Requirements for rooms with gas boilers

The rules governing the building codes for the installation of kitchens and boiler rooms for gas equipment are aimed at increasing instrument safety. It is not worth neglecting them, otherwise it is not far from serious problems.

Methane and propane-butane burned in household boiler rooms are explosive. If, during a leak from a pipe or cylinder, this gas fuel begins to accumulate in the room, then cotton with certain damages is inevitable.

Subject to certain rules, gas boilers may be installed:

  • in kitchens in apartments and private houses;
  • in the basement and in the attic of the cottage;
  • in the garage and a small workshop;
  • in a separate building or located directly in a residential building boiler room.

If the equipment is installed by a private person in order to create an autonomous heating and / or hot water supply system, then everything is quite simple with the supervisory authorities.

Checking the premises for compliance with the standards and the boiler itself for the correct connection will be carried out by the gas supplying organization. It is she who is responsible for control in this matter. If the gas workers do not like something, then they simply will not let them connect to the pipe.

Choosing a room for the boiler
Domestic gas boilers must not be installed in rooms with high humidity, for example, in bathrooms and bathrooms, in living rooms and corridors

If the gas boiler is powerful and is installed by an individual entrepreneur or legal entity, then it will additionally have to be registered with Rostekhnadzor. Experts from this organization will also come to check the premises.

Compliance also gas boiler devices will be controlled by firefighters from the Ministry of Emergency Situations. They regularly go home, checking the health of ventilation and smoke removal systems.

Air intake for gas combustion
For a gas boiler to work properly, it needs a constant flow of oxygen to fully burn gas through a coaxial pipe and / or door (window) in the furnace

There are plenty of reviewers. If one of them in the room where the gas boiler is installed, sees even the slightest deviation from the norm, then the equipment will have to be turned off until the defects are corrected. It is better to make an effort so that everything complies with the rules, rather than then remain without heat and hot water.

Boiler room in a private house

The boiler room attached or arranged inside the cottage should be made of non-combustible materials (brick, concrete). Finishing inside is also made non-combustible, excluding the spread of fire.

The extension for the gas boiler must:

  • have a separate foundation and floor made of concrete or ceramic tile;
  • to attach to a blank solid wall of the house;
  • to stand at least 1 meter from any window or door of the cottage;
  • equip natural ventilation based on a minimum of three times air exchange per hour;
  • have a natural opening window lighting area of at least 0.03 m2 on 1 m3 boiler room volume;
  • be with a ceiling height of 2.2 meters;
  • have a separate electrical outlet for volatile equipment of the heating system with wiring for PUE.

For boilers with a capacity of less than 30 kW, a room of at least 7.5 m is required3. For a device of 30-60 kW, a furnace from 13.5 m is required3.

And for more powerful equipment - from 15 m3, taking into account the requirements of the technical regulations for the operation of a particular gas device.

Access to boiler for maintenance
For unhindered access to the boiler, 1–1.5 meters of free space should remain in front of it in the room

The necessary air supply for the operation of the gas boiler must be provided through a coaxial chimney, transom, ventilation holes or a clearance of 2-3 cm under the door.

Kitchen in the apartment and cottage

In home kitchens, boilers up to 60 kW can be installed. However, gas workers are often allowed to mount devices with a capacity of only up to 35 kW.

Almost always, this is not connected with safety standards, but with technical specifications for connecting to a gas pipe. Some pipelines are simply not able to provide the proper flow of fuel to powerful equipment.

Wall mounted boiler
It is permissible to mount a wall-mounted boiler in the kitchen only on a blank wall and made of fireproof materials; partitions made of wood and drywall are not suitable for this purpose

The kitchen for the gas boiler must meet the following requirements:

  • volume - from 15 m3;
  • windows - with an area of at least 0.03 m2 per cubic meter of room and with opening wings or transom;
  • ventilation - with a natural influx and three-time air exchange (from 100 cubic meters per hour).

If the boiler is wall-mounted, it should remain at least 0.5 m from the side to the ceiling and walls, and 0.8 m to the floor. At the same time, it should be hung exclusively on a blank wall made of dense and refractory structural materials.

Drywall, plastic, SIP or MDF are not allowed here. Such equipment is allowed to be mounted on partitions made of logs or beams, but only with a gasket made of non-combustible asbestos or metal with a thickness of 3 mm or more.

If the kitchen is part of a studio combined with a hall, then installing a gas boiler in it is prohibited. According to the requirements of GOSTs and SNiPs, the installation of a gas boiler is permissible only in non-residential premises.

Boiler room at the enterprise

Regardless of the capacity, if the boiler is used by a legal entity, then the above norms are not applicable. In this case, the boiler must be installed in a separate furnace.

And the requirements for such a gas boiler at the enterprise are more stringent. And the more powerful the equipment and the higher the steam temperature, the higher these standards.

Industrial boiler room for a powerful boiler
An industrial boiler house is equipped with mandatory warning systems about the leakage of natural gas, as well as exceeding standards for carbon dioxide and high temperature in the room - the sensors are triggered when a fire

In the kitchens of apartments and heating houses, warning systems are recommended, but not required. And for boiler houses subject to control by Rostekhnadzor, this is a mandatory requirement.

All parameters of the premises for an industrial boiler are individual, prescribed in a separate project and separately agreed in the relevant state bodies. A lot here depends on the power of the mounted equipment.

Liquefied and Natural Gas Standards

Various models of domestic heating boilers can run on methane and a mixture of propane and butane. In both cases, the requirements for the minimum boiler room for a gas boiler, as well as other room parameters, are identical. However, there is one caveat in the matter ventilation.

Natural hood in the kitchen
Methane is lighter than air and, when leaking, rises to the ceiling, and propane-butane is heavier and falls to the floor or to the basement / cellar

If it is planned to place equipment in the boiler room or kitchen on main methane fuel, the natural ventilation openings in the room should be located under the ceiling. At the same time, their indent from the ceiling should not exceed 20 cm.

If the gas appliance will work from a gas tank or cylinder, the room must necessarily have ventilation vents at a height of 10-15 cm above the floor.

Natural ventilation should be arranged so that when the boiler dies or any other gas leak, the latter goes outside. The accumulation of methane or propane in the room is a direct path to explosion and fire.

Where it is impossible and it is possible to install a gas boiler:

If the norms and rules for installing a gas boiler are not complied with, then gas cannot be connected to the corresponding equipment. This applies to the requirements for the installation of the boiler, and ventilation with the removal of smoke, and the size of the room. Any deviations from the above requirements may lead to tragedy.
